Three Mistakes That Turn a Simple Defrost Into a Repair Bill
Small freezers don't get much attention. They sit under café counters, in garage corners, behind store registers—and most of them run on an Embraco compressor, the quiet workhorse of small refrigeration.
When I first started reviewing compressor returns, I assumed most "compressor failures" were the compressor's fault. Four years and 200+ teardowns later, I know better. It's usually the relay, the terminals, or a layer of dust on the condenser coils.
Knowing how to defrost a freezer properly—and what to check while it's empty—can add years to its life. This checklist is for anyone with a small freezer: a chest freezer, an under-counter unit, a compact upright. Maybe you're running a small café. Maybe you're just tired of your garage freezer turning into an ice cave. Either way, you can work through these seven steps in an afternoon, no technician required.

Step 1: Empty the Freezer and Unplug It
Move everything into coolers or a backup freezer. Then unplug the unit and remove every drawer, basket, and shelf so they can dry separately. Lay a few towels around the base—meltwater always escapes, even if you think it won't.
Step 2: Help the Ice Melt—the Safe Way
Leave the door open (or lift the lid on a chest freezer). Set two or three bowls of hot water inside, then close the door if you can—the steam does the work. A small fan aimed at the ice also helps, especially in an upright unit.
Whatever you do, don't chip at the ice with a screwdriver, scraper, or any metal tool. A punctured evaporator line is one of the most common avoidable failures we see in warranty returns. Replacement costs more than the freezer is worth, honestly. Let the ice melt on its own.
Replace the bowls every 20 minutes or so and wipe up fallen chunks before they refreeze.
Also, why go through this at all? Ice is an insulator. When the walls are coated with frost, the evaporator can't absorb heat efficiently, so the compressor runs longer on every cycle. That's wasted electricity and extra wear on the relay, terminals, and motor—exactly the parts we're about to check.
Step 3: Clean the Interior and Test the Door Gasket
Once the ice is gone, wipe the interior with warm water and a little baking soda (nothing abrasive). Dry it thoroughly. Skip the harsh chemical cleaners—they can leave fumes that get absorbed into food. Warm water and baking soda is genuinely all you need.
Now test the gasket. Close the door on a dollar bill, then try to slide it out. If it moves easily, the gasket isn't sealing properly. That makes the compressor run longer and harder, which shortens its life and raises your electricity bill. Replacement gaskets are cheap—swap it now while the freezer is empty.
Also check the drain hole at the bottom of the cabinet and clear any debris or mold.
Step 4: Pull It Out and Clean the Condenser Coils
Here's the step almost everyone skips.
The condenser coils are the black metal fins behind the lower grille, or on the back of some models. They reject heat to the room. When they're coated in dust, the compressor runs hotter and cycles longer than it should.
Unplug the freezer (it should already be unplugged) and pull it away from the wall. Remove the grille or access panel. Vacuum the coils with a soft brush attachment, or blow them out—a leaf blower works great. I keep a Milwaukee leaf blower in my shop for exactly this. A few seconds of airflow across the coils clears a year's worth of dust, pet hair, and lint. Then put the panel back.
On a chest freezer, the grille is usually at the bottom front. On a compact upright, you might need to remove a back panel. The manufacturer's manual shows where it is; usually, it's one or two screws.
While you've got access, spin the condenser fan blade by hand (if your model has one). It should turn freely without scraping anything.
Step 5: Inspect the Embraco Compressor Start Relay
Now that the freezer is open and the compressor is accessible, check the start relay. On most small freezers, it's a small black box clipped to the side of the Embraco compressor, with wires leading into the compressor housing.
I didn't fully appreciate how often relays kill small freezers until our Q1 2024 audit, when burnt relays outnumbered confirmed compressor defects by a wide margin. If your freezer is humming but not starting, clicking repeatedly, or tripping the breaker, the relay is a prime suspect.
Here's what to look for:
- Dark spots, a burnt smell, or a melted/cracked casing → replace the relay.
- Loose wire connections → tighten them, or replace the relay if the terminals look corroded.
- Signs of overheating on the relay body → order a replacement now, even if the freezer still runs.
When ordering, copy the part number printed on the relay casing and match it exactly. Many Embraco compressors use similar-looking relays, but the electrical ratings differ. The wrong relay starts the compressor fine—for a while. Then it fails.
Step 6: Check the Embraco Compressor Terminals
Underneath the relay sit the Embraco compressor terminals—three pins, usually labeled S (start), R (run), and C (common). Pull the relay straight off the pins (no tools needed, though a gentle wiggle helps).
Inspect each pin:
- Rust or corrosion → clean carefully with fine sandpaper or electrical contact cleaner.
- Burn marks or melted plastic around a pin → the connection has been overheating; replace the relay and inspect the wiring.
- A loose pin that moves when touched → this one is serious. If the terminal is loose inside the compressor housing, the compressor will need to be replaced. Call a technician.
Safety note: make sure the freezer has been unplugged for at least 15 minutes before touching these connections. If your model has a run capacitor, that component can store a charge even when unplugged—discharge it properly or let a pro handle this step.
When you're done, press the relay back on until it clicks fully over the pins. A half-seated relay causes intermittent starts and arcing. I've flagged that more than once during compliance reviews.
Step 7: Plug It Back In and Verify Startup
Plug the freezer in and set it to the coldest setting. Many modern units have a built-in compressor delay, so don't panic if it stays quiet for a few minutes.
Normal startup sounds like a soft hum, followed by a click as the relay drops out. That click is good—it means the compressor started and the relay left the starting circuit. If the unit keeps clicking every few seconds without staying on, the relay is likely failing or wasn't seated properly.
Let it run for two to three hours, then check the interior temperature with a thermometer. Per FDA guidance, freezers should hold 0°F (-18°C) or below. If it's not getting there, the gasket, relay, or condenser coils are the smartest places to start looking.
Three Mistakes That Turn a Simple Defrost Into a Repair Bill
After reviewing hundreds of returned small freezers, here are the mistakes that show up again and again:
- Chipping ice out with metal tools. It's the fastest way to puncture an evaporator coil, and it's the most common preventable failure I see. Ice melts. Let it.
- Skipping the relay and terminal inspection. You've already pulled the freezer out and spent the afternoon defrosting. The relay is right there. Five minutes of looking costs nothing—and it gives you a real shot at catching a failing part before it leaves you with a freezer full of thawed food.
- Mismatching the replacement relay. Relay casings look alike. Ratings don't. If you're ordering an Embraco compressor start relay, use the part number from the original relay. And write down the compressor model from the metal nameplate too—both numbers help you get the right part the first time.
Here's the thing: the small freezer doesn't get the same service attention as a big walk-in cooler, but it works just as hard. A defrost day, a clean set of condenser coils, and a relay check are the cheapest preventive maintenance you'll ever do. The chest freezer in your garage deserves it. The under-counter unit in your café does too. And no, this doesn't require a service contract—just an afternoon, a screwdriver, and maybe a leaf blower.
