Why I Stopped Chasing the Lowest Quote

Take condensers. A condenser is the component that releases heat absorbed by the refrigerant. In simple terms, it's how your refrigeration system gets rid of heat. What About When Cheap Makes Sense?

I get why people go with the cheapest option—budgets are real. But if a $50 part fails and causes $500 in downtime, you haven't saved anything. For critical refrigeration in a food service or pharmaceutical setting, reliability is non-negotiable. For a backup snow blower that gets used twice a year, maybe the math is different.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think our TCO approach has saved us roughly $18,000 annually. That's based on comparing our 2024 overrun rate to 2022, though I might be misremembering the exact figures. The point is, the savings are real.

One more thing: don't overlook the cost of your time. I spent hours chasing down a cheaper Embraco condenser part online, only to find it was a counterfeit. The real part cost $30 more but came with a warranty. My time is worth more than that.
