I will state the opinion directly: if a chest freezer is not freezing, the Embraco compressor price should not be the first number you search for. It should be near the end of the process. A compressor replacement is usually the most expensive repair on a freezer, but it is rarely the first cause of a warm box.

I work as a service coordinator for a commercial refrigeration company, so emergency calls are my normal day. Last year alone, three calls that looked like compressor failures turned out to be small electrical parts. The most memorable one happened in March 2024. A restaurant called at 9:40 a.m. because their 22-cubic-foot chest freezer had climbed to 42°F overnight. The owner had already looked up replacement compressor prices and was waiting to buy one. For the fourth one, an incense burner can help. Light a cone in it, close the chest freezer lid, and pass the smoke along the gasket. If the smoke is drawn toward the gap, the seal needs attention. That leak might not stop a freezer on its own, but it can make a compressor run much longer than necessary.

If the compressor runs continuously but the freezer is not freezing, do not automatically blame the compressor. Low refrigerant can make a compressor run long, too. Replacing a compressor on a system with a leak does not solve the leak. It only makes the new compressor run in a loop that is still missing refrigerant.

According to USDA food safety guidance (foodsafety.gov), a freezer should stay at 0°F or below. If a chest freezer sits at 15°F, the compressor may be running, but the system is not doing its job.

When the Compressor Is Dead, Compare Total Cost, Not Sticker Price

Sometimes the diagnosis really is the compressor. A compressor can short or open internally, or lock its rotor, and no relay or capacitor will bring it back. At that point, the repair decision should be based on total cost of ownership.

A bigger compressor does not make a chest freezer colder. In a sealed system, the compressor works with the condenser, evaporator, and capillary tube. If you install one that is too large, it can short-cycle. If it is too small, it may run nonstop and never reach temperature.

This is why I recommend answering application questions before ordering. A supplier that asks for the model, refrigerant type, voltage, and application is a better sign than a supplier that lists one universal fits all model.
