Check the terminals before you order the compressor
Most of the time, when an Embraco compressor stops starting, the problem isn't the sealed unit. It's the electrical connection on top. Before you order an Embraco NT6215Z compressor replacement, check the compressor terminals first. If they're charred, bent, or fitted with the wrong relay, the compressor itself may be fine. Buying an OEM terminal kit is probably the least painful fix—especially if you can get it before the service call. The part is inexpensive, the repair is straightforward, and the alternative is a callback that wipes out any savings. (note to self: I keep having to say this.)

I'm an office administrator for a 40-person HVAC/R parts distribution branch. I handle roughly $400K in annual purchasing across 12 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which means I see the same order from two angles: operations wants it fast, finance wants it cheap. I don't turn wrenches, but I've processed enough Embraco compressor terminal orders to know what goes wrong.
The mistake that changed how I order Embraco compressor terminals
When I first started this job, I assumed compressor terminals were a generic thing. I thought any relay that clicked into place would work. That assumption cost us real money. In March 2023, a customer thought their Embraco NT6215Z compressor had failed. We shipped a replacement compressor—and, to keep the job moving, a substitute relay that we believed was compatible. The pins aligned. The relay clicked. The compressor hummed, started for a second, then stopped. It repeated until the contacts burned. It looked like another compressor failure. The tech was getting ready to swap in the new unit when he checked the terminal housing. The pins were charred. We replaced the relay and the terminal kit instead. The 'dead' compressor was never actually dead.
I still kick myself for not asking for a photo of the old relay before we shipped the substitute. If I'd asked, we would have caught the mismatch before it became a weekend service call. The total was around $380 in field labor plus $65 in freight—on parts that cost $42.
The surprise wasn't the failed relay. It was that the original compressor had been fine the whole time. Since then, I verify the terminal configuration before I generate a purchase order. If a customer tells us the compressor is dead, I ask for a photo of the terminals and the data plate. That one question eliminates a surprising number of compressor orders.
Same logic applies when someone calls about an AC compressor in a refrigerated display case or a rooftop unit. The terminal inspection takes less time than replacing the entire compressor, and it's a lot cheaper. I've also seen a failed start capacitor misdiagnosed as a compressor failure, but terminals are the first thing to check because they're visible.
Temporary fixes have their place
In July 2024, one of our service techs kept a slightly overheated compressor running for a full weekend with a portable Ryobi fan aiming air at the terminal housing. It sounds like a deadline move, but it honestly worked as a temporary workaround. It brought the case temperature down enough to keep product from thawing. The catch: the reason it was overheating was a high-resistance connection at the compressor terminals. The fan bought time, but didn't fix anything. We still had to swap the terminal kit and relay on Monday. (mental note: stock the fan too? No, people can buy their own.)
I mention this because a fan, or a shop-vac, or even a clean condensing coil can mask an electrical problem for a while. Sometimes that's exactly what you need on a hot Friday afternoon. But the compressor terminals will still be waiting for you on Monday.
Bottom line: total cost, not unit price
I'm not saying a low-price aftermarket relay is always wrong. But the total cost framework matters. I calculate: part price + freight + expected labor + probability of a return visit + cost of downtime. In the March 2023 example, the substitute relay was $14. The correct Embraco compressor terminals kit was $42. But the substitute's real total ended up around $461: $14 part, $380 field labor, $65 freight. The correct part's real total—with no callback—was $42 plus an hour of labor. That's the whole argument.
On any compressor terminal order, I check the model number, the voltage, the terminal layout, and whether the relay and overload protector match the datasheet. It's a short checklist, but it catches most of the bad orders. It also gives finance something they can file if a part goes back.
Freezer burn and the food-safety question
I get asked "Is freezer burn safe to eat?" most often after a freezer goes down and customers go through the inventory. Freezer burn is safe to eat. It's dry, oxidized spots from air reaching the food. It won't make you sick, but it tastes bad and the texture is rough. However, if the freezer sat above 40°F for more than two hours, don't use freezer burn as a safety indicator. That's a thawing issue, not freezer burn. Safe-to-eat is not the same as worth-eating.
That's a food safety tangent, but it's connected to the compressor question more than you'd think. When a freezer compressor fails, someone has to make a call about product. Knowing what's cosmetic and what's a real hazard helps you make that call under pressure.
Boundary conditions and a few caveats
One caveat: I'm writing this as of January 2025. Embraco products change, terminal kits vary by voltage and application, and distributor stock does too. The NT6215Z is a specific model, so confirm the data plate specs before ordering. What I learned in 2023 was accurate for that compressor; it may not apply to every compressor that walks in the door.
Also, if the compressor itself is locked up, a terminal kit won't help. Check the windings with a multimeter, or at least listen for a hum. Hum-but-no-start tends to point to relay or start components. No hum at all means the issue is often upstream: contactor, thermostat, or wiring.
If you've already decided to replace an Embraco NT6215Z compressor, fine—but take the terminal kit with it. The extra cost is nothing compared with the second visit. And don't take my word as the final spec. Use the official Embraco datasheet and your supplier's cross-reference. I include that because I've learned these lessons by making the mistake, not by reading a manual.
