Chest Freezer Not Cooling? Common Embraco Compressor Warranty and Start Relay Questions

Why this FAQ exists

I manage purchasing for a commercial refrigeration service company. I don't repair compressors myself, but I've ordered enough Embraco compressor warranty replacements and start relay parts since 2020 to know which questions matter. If a chest freezer isn't cooling, or a tech said the compressor start relay is weak, this list is more useful than the 20 browser tabs I kept open the first time I dealt with it.

The first thing I tell every caller: find the compressor data tag and take a clear photo. The model and serial number answer most of the questions below.

1. What does an Embraco compressor warranty actually cover?

People expect me to say two years or five years and be done. I don't. The warranty path depends on who sold the equipment. A compressor inside a chest freezer or refrigerator is usually covered under the appliance manufacturer's warranty first. A bare compressor purchased from a distributor is covered by the distributor's policies and the manufacturer's claim process.

When I ask a supplier about an Embraco compressor warranty, I want three answers in writing:

  • Does it cover manufacturing defects only, or installation issues too?
  • What documents do I need? Most claims I've processed require original invoice plus compressor serial number.
  • If the compressor is dead on arrival, who pays the labor to swap it again?

I'm not saying every distributor hides terms. I am saying a promised warranty that doesn't include labor is less helpful when the labor cost ends up being higher than the part cost. Ask before you buy, not after.

2. What does an Embraco compressor start relay do, and why does it fail?

In simple terms, a start relay gives the compressor motor an extra push in the first milliseconds. It sends power to the start winding, then drops out once the motor is running. On an Embraco compressor, the relay is often clipped to the side of the compressor shell. Sometimes the overload protection is built into the same component.

The frustrating part, from a purchasing perspective, is that a failed relay can look perfectly fine. No burn marks, no smell, no obvious damage. The freezer just sits there warm while the light is on.

Common clues:

  • No click sound when the compressor should start.
  • A click, hum, or buzzing sound that repeats every few seconds.
  • The compressor feels hot because the overload keeps tripping.

Here's the part that catches people: a bad start relay can be the symptom, not just the cause. If the compressor motor windings are shorted or the compressor is mechanically stuck, a new relay may work for a day and then fail again. I always ask whether the technician actually measured the run current before selling the relay.

3. How do I pick the right Embraco compressor start relay for a chest freezer?

By the compressor model, not the chest freezer brand. The appliance model helps, but if the compressor was replaced before you owned the freezer, the cabinet label may not match what's installed anymore.

What I need from a photo is simple:

  • The compressor model and serial number stamped on the compressor dome.
  • The relay part number if it's still readable.
  • The refrigerant type if the data tag or freezer label shows it.

An Embraco compressor start relay is selected by electrical characteristics, not by physical size. Two relays can look identical and still be rated for different starting currents. Order the wrong one and you'll likely be doing the same service call twice. Take the extra two minutes to write the model down.

4. If I replace a compressor, does it have to be the same model?

It has to be compatible, not necessarily identical. But don't accept the shortcut that any compressor with the same size or same horsepower will work. That's one of the biggest oversimplifications in refrigeration repair.

At minimum, the replacement must match the refrigerant, voltage, intended evaporating temperature, and application. A compressor built for a freezer is not automatically right for a refrigerator. A system using R-600a also has flammability considerations that affect how the work needs to be done. This is why manufacturers sell matched condensing units and defined compressor selection data. The engineering matters more than the brand color.

Before I order a cross-reference, I ask the technician or supplier to confirm the application. If the answer is just 'same size, it'll blow cold,' I slow down.

5. Should I repair the chest freezer or replace it?

I can't answer that from a distance, but I can tell you what makes the decision easier. If the problem is only the start relay, the repair cost is relatively small and probably worth it. If the compressor itself is locked up and the sealed system is contaminated, a compressor swap can turn into a much larger job.

When the sealed system has been open, moisture and acid can get into the lines. A proper repair may include replacing the filter drier, evacuating the system, adjusting refrigerant charge, and testing the new compressor under load. Any quote that only says 'compressor replacement' should make you pause.

Get the scope in writing. Compare it against the age of the chest freezer and how long you expect to use it. I've seen people replace a compressor in a 15-year-old freezer only to have the condenser leak three months later. That's not a reason to skip repair. It's a reason to understand what the estimate includes and excludes.

6. How to reset Honeywell thermostat after a cooling failure

This question seems unrelated, but it shows up in compressor searches more than you'd expect. If a thermostat controls cooling and the system has a built-in compressor protection delay, resetting the thermostat can sometimes restore normal operation. But if you're dealing with a failed compressor relay or a sealed-system leak, no reset will fix that.

For Honeywell thermostats, the steps are model-specific. For many display models, the safest first step is to set the system to Off, remove the batteries or gently pull the display face off, wait about 30 seconds, and put it back. On models with a small reset pinhole, a paperclip is usually enough. For Wi-Fi thermostats, the manual normally lists a reset option under Settings or Restore. I'd check the exact manual because pressing the wrong button on an installer menu can change settings you didn't know existed.

7. Does this article help with a Milwaukee air compressor?

Probably not. If you searched for Milwaukee air compressor and landed here, you're in the wrong section of the compressor universe. Embraco is a refrigeration compressor brand used in freezers, refrigerators, and commercial cooling equipment. Milwaukee air compressors are air compressors. Different job, different parts, different repair path.

An Embraco compressor start relay is not the part you need for a Milwaukee air compressor that won't start. Air compressors have pressure switches, tank check valves, and unloader valves that work differently from refrigeration systems. If your air compressor hums or won't restart, unplug it, drain the tank pressure, and then test the pressure switch and check valve. Don't put a refrigeration relay on an air compressor motor just because both are called compressors.

When I need a replacement compressor part, I always order by the compressor model, not by the appliance brand or by the word compressor alone. That one habit saves more time than any troubleshooting shortcut.
