The Compressor Is the Last Thing I Approve
When a freezer stops cooling, the natural reflex is to suspect the compressor. I understand why. The compressor is the heart of the system, and it's the most expensive part to replace. But after six years of reviewing repair invoices and tracking our refrigeration spend, I've learned that a compressor diagnosis without a full-system check is usually just a guess.
The question isn't 'Is the compressor dead?' The question is 'What is the cheapest fix that addresses the real failure?' In my cost tracking spreadsheet, the answer tends to fall into one of three scenarios.
Start With the Real Failure Point
The failure could be in one of three places: airflow, refrigerant, or the compressor itself. In that order. Why does this matter? Because airflow and refrigerant problems make a healthy compressor work harder until it eventually dies. The old compressor might be the victim, not the cause.
For example, a weak blower motor inside the evaporator section reduces airflow over the coil. The evaporator gets too cold, the suction pressure drops, and the compressor runs longer to try to satisfy the thermostat. Does that mean the compressor is bad? Probably not. It means the blower motor is doing a poor job and the compressor is taking the blame.
